M. Lawrence Phillips writes from Lookout Mountain, Alabama.
Phillips is a U.S. Army and Cold War veteran who served as a combat telecommunications specialist. He was in Berlin on November 9, 1989, when the Berlin Wall came down. He holds FAA Part 107, FCC Amateur Extra with VLEO credentials, and studied at Mercer University, Purdue University, and the University of Maryland. Work, military service, and circumstance have repeatedly placed him in historical places at historical times.
His writing draws from archival research, family history, firsthand experience, and time spent on the ground in the places he writes about. Rather than treating history as something confined to books and museums, Phillips looks for the traces that remain—in roads, rivers, neighborhoods, battlefields, buildings, family stories, and the landscape itself.
The Alabama titles are The Land Before Alabama, Taking of the Land, The Land Still Speaks, Cotton to Rockets, Thundering Waters and Alabama Before America.
Other books: From the Little a to the Big A (Atlanta memoir), Office 29, and Shoe Boxes.
